Montopoli in Val D’arno, in the heart of Tuscany
The nearby town of Montopoli is within walking distance of our village.
It is of medieval origins, even traces of Etruscan and Roman sites have been found within its territory. Lucca, Pisa and Florence fought over Montopoli for a long time.
The famous Italian writer Boccaccio called it “famous castle”. The remains of its towers and ancient fortifications are evidence of its past as a military outpost.
The Tower of San Matteo, the arch of Castruccio, and the remains of the fortress, which is also a beautiful lookout point, are all worth a visit.
But the beauty of Montopoli lies in its position, in the heart of the beautiful Tuscan landscape, with its hills, villas and villages that follow the river Arno. Nowadays Montopoli, besides its natural beauty and historical sites, is also of interest for its resources in agriculture, arts and crafts and traditional industries.
Every second Sunday in September a wonderful festival is held in Montopoli. This festival includes medieval costumes, the traditional archery challenge among the rioni (quarters) and the performance of traditional medieval arts in the streets of the village.
